To enroll in the BSAI program, you first need to apply to the School of Computer Science as an undergrad. If you're a high school student interested in applying, check out our Office of Undergraduate Admission for more information. And make sure you mention your interest in the BSAI program when you write your personal essay.
Once you're a student in SCS, you can declare the BSAI major at the end of your first year — giving you the chance to take a full year of coursework before you make a decision. If you plan to become a BSAI major, you must take the spring mini course Concepts in Artificial Intelligence (07-180) first. Details on how to declare the BSAI major will be available closer to the deadline in March.
SCS students can freely transfer between the school’s majors. To transfer into BSAI from another SCS major, you need to have completed or be taking 15-281 and 10-315, and cannot transfer until the spring semester of your sophomore year. For all such transfers, 07-180 will be waived. Learn more on our Transfer Guidelines page.
There is limited availability for non-SCS CMU students to transfer directly into the BSAI program. You need to be at least finishing your sophomore year and have taken six of the core courses needed for the AI major. Details can be found on the Transfer Guidelines page.
