What We're Doing
Student Activities Fair
The DEI office is hosting a Student Activities Fair from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to showcase the student groups within SCS and encourage student involvement. Students from all levels are welcome to attend.
Student Group Meetings
Women@SCS, SCS4ALL and SCS4A11y will resume meetings this fall on alternating Mondays, 4:30–5:30 p.m. in GHC 4405. Some of the planned activities include hosting an "Ask Me Anything" panel discussion with SCS faculty, a special event with Duolingo and a yearly Halloween Party. We will also host listening circles for students on the fourth Monday of each month.
OurCS Final Schedule and Research Problems
Thank you to everyone who responded to the call for volunteers for the 2022 OurCS Conference, Oct. 20–23. Our next steps will be to finalize the schedule and to construct teams of industry and faculty mentors and students organized around relevant research problems in computing. Stay tuned for more information.
Ph.D. Student Volunteers Needed to Review Ph.D. Program Applications
SCS has previously organized feedback for Ph.D. program applicants' statements of purpose and would like to offer this service to the community this year. If you are a current Ph.D. student in SCS and interested in volunteering to review a small number of statements of purpose in Ph.D. applications, email the DEI office at scs-dei@cs.cmu.edu.
Announcements
The CMU AI Mentorship program provides support for undergraduates, especially those from underrepresented groups, who might be interested in getting involved in AI research. We pair these students with grad students and postdocs to work collaboratively on a research project over the course of the semester. They are organizing an info session at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 in NSH 4307. More information is available on their website.
If you are interested in learning about a longitudinal study on faculty hiring and retention data, you can join Daniel Larremore's NSF Waterman Lecture, "Trends in U.S. Faculty Hiring and Retention From Ten Years of Data: A Study of Prestige, Diversity and Inequality," 1–2 p.m. on Sept. 28.
