National Hispanic American Heritage Month

Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month, when we pay tribute to generations of Hispanic Americans who have enriched and influenced our society in positive ways. There are a number of events scheduled to celebrate and recognize this part of our culture:

  • SCS will hold a light and sound celebration with special programming and music on the Pausch Bridge. We will collaborate with, and collect donations for, Coro Latinoamericano Pittsburgh, one of the nation’s only secular choirs performing in Spanish. Stay tuned for more details.
  • CMU Libraries is featuring a DEI Book Display for Hispanic Heritage Month. From 9 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, the Library will hold a discussion of the New York Times Bestseller, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloot. Unfortunately, this event is fully booked, but look for information to be shared after the event.
  • CMU’s Institute for Policy and Society will hold a panel discussion on "The Challenges of the Latino Community in the Pittsburgh Region." The discussion will include living conditions and the effectiveness of public engagement. IPS Professor Ignacio Arana will moderate the discussion. Use this form to register for this online event.
  • CMU’s Center for Arts and Society will screen four films in October for Hispanic Heritage Month: "Zoot Suit" (4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, in POS152); "Raising Victor Vargas" (4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, in POS153); "The Infiltrators" (6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, in POS153); and "Dolores" (4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17, in POS153).
  • The University of Pittsburgh is hosting a three-day Latinx Connect virtual conference October 14–16. Participants will discuss what it means to be Latinx/a/o/e/Hispanic in relation to intersectional identities, education, immigration, public health, arts and culture, history, and other topical areas. Learn more and register for this virtual event.
  • The National Science Foundation is hosting a panel, "Burgeoning Opportunities: Attracting and Retaining More LatinX Researchers in STEM," from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7. Register for this online event.

Oct. 11 is both National Coming Out Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. Stay tuned for updates from CMU Leadership for information about celebrations and events to honor this day.
