SCS DEI Update

Jan. 21, 2022

SCS4A11y Seeks Members!

SCS is launching a new student group, focused on accessibility, with three goals: 1) teaching accessibility; 2) accessible teaching; and 3) encouraging accessibility in our community. Teaching accessibility will focus on encouraging students who want to participate in TeachAccess' Study Away Program to learn more about the importance of accessibility thinking in software development in the industry and share what they learn during the program with the SCS community. Accessible teaching will focus on making course syllabi and content accessible, and on TA training. Encouraging accessibility will take the form of awards and events to excite the community about this topic, such as just-in-time lectures and hackathons.

If you are interested in getting involved, contact Fern Limprayoon, jlimpray@andrew.cmu.edu.

The kick-off meeting is scheduled for 5–6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, in GHC 4405. If university leadership requires remote-only meetings, the Zoom information is provided below. We will support a hybrid format for the meeting either way.

Here’s What We Have Been Reading Relative to Accessibility

Announcements

Register for the 2022 ATHEN Virtual STEM Accessibility Conference: Starting with Math. ATHEN is pleased to announce Zach Lattin, STEM accessibility expert, as its inaugural keynote speaker, who will present "Arbitrarily Close to Access in STEM." The notion of a limit from calculus is something that engineering majors and pure math majors alike encounter repeatedly throughout their undergraduate studies. In this talk, Zach will look at STEM accessibility issues through the lens of various definitions of a limit and share some personal stories along the way. Don't worry, familiarity with math or calculus is not required.

TartanHacks, Pittsburgh’s largest hackathon, is coming up Feb. 4–6!

Due to COVID-19 concerns, this will be a virtual experience for off-campus participants and a hybrid experience for on-campus participants. There will be challenges for hackers to participate in to receive swag, and winners will receive prizes regardless of location.

Register on the TartanHacks website.

TODAY: Registration is open for everyone
January 22: Registration closes for on-campus students for guaranteed acceptance
